yWriter 5 is the newest version of the yWriter program, a novel writing program that organises your story into manageable sizes and allows you to keep track of characters, locations, items and events in your novel.
It's 100% free. At it's most basic, yWriter is a word processor. It's strength lies in being a word processor in which you can split your novel into smaller pieces and keep track of everything that happens. For instance, rather than wading back through your novel to check what equipment your character had, or what a previous location looked like you can simply record the location description and easily find it later.
Splitting the novel into chapters and scenes allows for easily moving and re-organising your novel. Think of it as splitting the novel into modules. It allows for far easier editing and managing of it, rather than attempting to manage one huge file in a word processor. And that is the real strength of yWriter.
The interface is easy to learn, a couple of minutes messing around with it will teach you all you need to know. Then it's simply a matter of knuckling down and writing your novel!
If you are tired of writing in Microsoft Word and working with huge text files, give yWriter a try. It really is one of the more useful applications for novel writing we've come across. Well thought out, bug free and immensely useful. Kudos to the developers for this. You can get yWriter from the developer website here
